Johnny Hernandez – Professional Coach 13U,14U & HS

Baseball has always been a part of my life. Growing up in Brooklyn, I experienced a lot of baseball as a teenager. I was blessed to be able to play my 4 years of high school baseball at Xaverian high school in Brooklyn NY. In 1998 the St. Louis Cardinals drafted me in the 15th Round and I spent 5 years under their organization. My experience with the Cardinals allowed me to realize what a great country I lived and I had the honor of serving my country in the United States Navy and was attached to an Assault Craft Unit 1, Squad Leader and ultimately served tours in Iraq and Africa.

Upon returning home to the states I had the opportunity to play for the Long Island Ducks organization and then spent my time with Long Island University as a D1 hitting coach and was responsible for recruiting and signing players. During my time with L.I.U, I watched our offense ranking hit sixth in the country and enjoyed seeing 2 of my players get selected to the MLB. I have enjoyed the 8 years of professional baseball the God has blessed me with and the impact that it has had on my life. Over the past couple of years I have been involved as a head coach with youth travel ball and HS ball.

When I am not on the field, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children in the greater Atlanta area. I have been asked to be a part of My Game Is On and hope that my experiences both on and off the field will be impactful.

  1. Johnny,
Welcome to the site. What would you say was your biggest accomplishment on and off the field?

  2. If you had to pick 2 , what would you say is the most important thing/things to focus on when trying out for a team?

  3. Hi Johnny,

What portion of a practice session (if any) do you devote to conditioning drills (such as footwork, speed and agility)?
